Igniting Leadership Program Blog: Series 3 Day 2
18 July 2014 By Guest Blog - Matthew Marszal
After tackling the first day with general caution and anxiety about what’s this program all about? Will it be the same type of stuff I have attended before? I came into the second day with a little more confidence about what I was there to take out of the course and eagerness to get into some more experience from other attendees and guest speakers.
The day started off with a discussion about a guy dancing on a hill and soon being joining by a second dancer, then some time later by over 100 people dancing on a hill together.
It reminded me of how I dance by myself for hours and never get to dance with anybody….heart breaking stuff.
After the first exercise discussion we moved onto our first speaker of the day for “leadership dissected”. Our first speaker was in the field of medicine and explained the change from a medical researcher to a leader of a department and the similarities both positions included. He was very humble of his achievements and his opinions of what he believed made a good leader.
After the morning break we discussed some workplace challenges we currently had, I enjoyed this task as it was a great chance to openly discuss an issue with other leaders and having an insight to what they thought was the best course of action to take.
Our second speaker then joined us after the lunch break to discuss Values and how values have a big part in leadership. I believe he was fantastic at tackling everyday issues and bringing different values into question. This was a real eye opener for me as it made me step back and really look at how my values may differ from other people’s values and the importance of the message you are trying to get across to those people.
In the afternoon we discussed our (SDI), most people were not surprised by their leadership profiles, we then discussed these results and what characteristics our categories bring to conversation in the workplace.
Ending Day 2 I could not believe how much we had been through in only 2 days. After listening to 4 speakers over two days I feel I have already taken in so much from the course. I look forward to the remaining 3 days and hope to learn even more from other guest’s experiences.
Thanks to the team that have put this course together, I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far.
Extra Highlights of day 2 that should not be missed-
Morning Tea- Fruit on a stick!
Lunch- rolls and sandwiches- I ate too much food!
Afternoon Tea- Scones with Jam and Cream (I’d better go to the gym tonight).
I saw Steve Bracks in the building (really wanted to say ‘hey bracksy” and a thumbs up).
Awesome building- so much history!
