“Can we live with the future?”: Leadership Oration 2025
14/03/2025As leaders reach the peak of their careers, society often suggests that their most valuable contributions are behind them. But what if, instead of stepping back, they stepped forward by bringing their career-long expertise, networks, and strategic insight to create meaningful impact on the pressing challenges facing our communities?
Victoria is facing complex social, economic, and environmental challenges. From climate change to housing insecurity, we need skilled leadership more than ever. Yet, many leaders exiting full-time careers find themselves uncertain about where they can contribute.
There is a clear mismatch between available expertise and the needs of our communities. Accomplished leaders should have structured opportunities to apply their skills where they are most needed, through community-focused governance, mentoring, volunteering and strategic problem-solving (Harvard Business Review, 2019). Leadership isn’t a title; it’s an action and it should not be limited by career timelines.
The existing narrative around stepping away from full-time work often emphasises recreation and entering a “lifestyle” phase of life. While personal time is valuable, we must challenge the societal messaging that tells accomplished leaders to fade into the background when, in reality, they have never been better equipped to create meaningful change. Yemiscigil, Powdthavee & Whillans (2021) explained that full-time work is a key source of purpose, playing an important role in identity in society. When leaders transition out of full-time work, they “lose the roles, goals, and structure provided by work, which can create an existential vacuum", causing feelings of aimlessness.
The question is not whether these leaders still have something to offer, but how we can better connect them with the challenges that demand their insight and help them maintain purpose and meaning. If we leverage this wealth of experience effectively, we can create a future where leadership is a lifelong contribution, not a career stage.
Programs like Leadership Victoria’s Beyond provide a pathway for experienced leaders to channel their expertise into positive impact, ensuring their leadership expertise continues to shape the future.
